When it comes to advancing your career, the first and largest mistake most job hunters make is the simple act of asking for a raise. Instead, get inside your boss' head and look at it from his/her point of view. Instead of asking for a raise, show them all the ways you've created additional value for the company and get them to admit as much.

Also, Diamond said "walking out" and other hardline approaches aren't the way to go. Collaboration will get you four times as much than walking out. Additionally, don't ask for everything at once. If you ask for a raise and your boss counters with half, take it. Thinking incrementally is an advantage, as long as you ask your boss when it's OK to come back and reassess the situation at a later date.
